A lot of readers don't pick up on the little things that writers throw in there. Constantly ask yourself questions about color of objects, adjectives, and even things like weather. For example, green is associated with money, jealousy or avarice. Look at F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. Why does Gatsby stare at Daisy's green lantern out by the sea?
